The Charity of Metta, Loving-Kindness and Lasting Impact.

As a community-based project, our aim is to reduce poverty, protect nature’s beauty, and help people find peace of mind, all in the pursuit of a world where true happiness thrives.

Our Story

Metta Trust, founded in 2013, is dedicated to creating lasting change by developing communities, protecting the environment, and promoting mental and physical well-being. What began as a simple act of kindness in building new homes and school facilities in rural Sri Lanka, has grown into a wide network of support for communities across the UK and Sri Lanka.

The charity work is driven by the success of Plantation Villa, a wellness retreat that was first based in Sri Lanka, and funds approximately 95% of the charity’s projects through its programs in yoga, mindfulness and Ayurveda. As the vision evolved, Metta Trust sought to address more than just poverty, aiming to teach people how to live in harmony with nature by reforesting and protecting wildlife. This led to the opening of a second Plantation Villa in Herefordshire UK in 2022, broadening Metta Trust’s reach and expanding it’s mission to assist with the rising of mental health issues in the UK.

Our Values
01
Metta — Loving-Kindness

At the heart of our mission lies the Buddhist principle of Metta—loving-kindness and compassion for all beings—a philosophy that guides us to focus on others’ welfare, remain compassionate in adversity, and cultivate a calm, peaceful mind.

02
Community

Metta Trust is rooted in a rich tradition of community care, inspired by the legacy of Wattalaya Watta, once the most generous household in Nehinna village, and carried forward by our founder Ishara as a unified community project through Metta Trust and Plantation Villa.

03
Nature

We believe a nurturing connection to nature is essential for human well-being and happiness, helping to reduce stress, calm the mind, and support a sustainable future for our shared planet.

04
Happiness

Though we all seek happiness, lasting fulfillment is found not in fleeting pleasures but in cultivating a strong, unshaken mind—a principle from the Buddha’s teachings that inspires our vision for a world of enduring happiness for all beings.

Charity Milestones
  • First Project

Built a brand new home for Roshan Senevirathne (trustee)

Miscellaneous small projects like donating school books, gifting food to villagers and planting trees.

  • Executing Larger Projects

Funded a £10,000 water system for the renowned Alan Mathiniyarama Temple.

Additionally built a collection of larger high-spend projects, including building toilets, libraries and playgrounds for schools and supporting hospitals.

  • Making it Official

Metta Trust officially became a registered charity in Sri Lanka

Consistently executing larger projects, expanding donations to other charities in Sri Lanka for disaster recovery, and poverty reduction.

  • Impacting Communities

Completed £20,000 village temple construction project in Nehinna.

Opened a free bi-monthly medical clinic for Nehinna village locals.

  • Covid-19 Assistance

We allocated all available resources to provide food and medicine to those in need.

Our income from Plantation Villa completely dried up during COVID-19, yet every bit of Plantation Villa’s reserved funding was used to support this effort.

  • Expanding Plantation Villa

Started global outreach with a new retreat centre in Hereford, UK.

Continuing to support underprivileged communities on a larger scale than before.

  • Our Vision

    1. Expanding our charity income sources.

To not rely solely on the income from Plantation Villa but also through fundraising and other corporate support.

    2. Open an education centre to support children in Sri Lanka.

Help kids beyond their regular school curriculum to develop skills in IT, English, and provide guidance for their future careers.

    3. Start a global initiative in improving mental health through holistic wellbeing programs.

Partner with the National Healthcare System (NHS)

Voices of Gratitude
We can’t thank Metta Trust enough for all of your work in making the barn so beautiful for the Christmas event, it is really appreciated by everyone. The event brought so many different groups of people together, a lovely way to build community.

“Metta Trust has allowed me to further my education on so many different levels. I was able to study yoga in India, Australia and England. I was also sponsored for studies with local Ayurveda practitioners. The latest was my MA in Buddhist Philosophy with the support of different monks for my learning. None of that would have been possible without the aid of Metta Trust and Plantation Villa.”
Head of Yoga and Therapy at Plantation Villa

“Meeting Miss Ishara was a turning point in my life. I completed my final school exams and was given this lucky chance to work in Plantation Villa. During that time period, I improved my English, personality and self-confidence and also learned yoga and Ayurvedic treatment methods. Above all, Miss Ishara gave me a golden opportunity to work in the UK, helping me move in a positive direction. I certainly believe that Miss Ishara and Metta Trust have impacted me to become a lotus among thousands of roses. Plantation Villa is a place where you can keep developing more and more.”
